Should the law be the same for everyone? A positively influencing person in the society (what a term for celebrities, politicians, social workers, sportsman, businessman etc) anyway gets priority status when they want to be heard, when they are heard their version of any topic is clearer as compared to the opposite side. This is how any system gives preferential treatment, can’t blame the entire world for it. Preferential treatment is given to known people in any like of business, banks tend to be lenient while lending loans, waiters in a restaurant tend to be nicer, air hostesses ask an extra question formulated specially for them to say yes, let’s not even get to the topic of complimentary stuff.
When famous people are treated differently by every other system why not the judiciary? Why shouldn’t a person caring for orphans be given 1 less year to serve in prison if he or she robs a bank ? (So they can get out early and continue their noble task) why shouldn’t a movie star be given 1 year more to serve in prison if he or she robs a bank? (So they influence less number of common people from doing the same). Why should the punishment be the same when the impact of it is different to oneself or environment ?
Punishment is subjective, not everyone gets the same. The idea is to make sure that a punishment brings in the same reformation in every person who commits a crime. No person is just a person, humans are social beings and always measured up based on what one is in the society.
